  An old Indian insight still feels surprisingly modern. Long before terms such as student agency , collaborative learning , constructivism and experiential education became part of modern pedagogical vocabulary, an old Sanskrit verse had already captured something essential about how people learn: Ācāryāt pādam ādatte pādaṁ śiṣyaḥ svamedhayā | Pādaṁ sabrahmacāribhyaḥ pādaṁ kālakrameṇa ca || In simple terms, it says that a learner gains one quarter from the teacher, one quarter through his or her own intelligence and effort, one quarter from fellow learners, and the remaining quarter with time and experience.
